BONDED MANUFACTURING
The manufacture-in-bond scheme once very popular during the 80s lost its appeal gradually against the advent of heavily facilitated venture often coupled with tax holidays, exemption of application of certain laws, assisted regulatory co-ordinations under the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, often offered to foreign direct investors.
During the time of peak, bonded manufacturing scheme was facilitating several industries from garments for export, assembly of washing machines and refrigerators etc. for local market. Now the scheme is used only by few entrepreneurs for manufacture of motor vehicles for home use and for refurbishment of refer containers etc.
Therefore, this area needs revisiting for remodeling and reengineering to cater for national needs giving an opportunity to our own entrepreneurs taking current developments into consideration.
Special Customs Zones are probable candidate in this direction.
